A.H.M. Scholtz

Andrew Henry Martin Scholtz, was a South African writer in Afrikaans who, at the age of 72 and with little formal education, wrote his first and multiple literary award-winning novel, Vatmaar – 'n Lewendagge verhaal van 'n tyd wat nie meer is nie (1995). The book has enjoyed equal renown in Dutch, German and English translations. Kwela Books published a translation by Chris van Wyk (2000) under the title A Place Called Vatmaar: A Living Story of a Time That Is No More. Scholtz, who was a Coloured, was born in Kimberley on 28 July 1923. He died on 17 November 2004 aged 81 years.[1]
